Healdsburg Multicultural Center

Designed by the community, from the start

What makes this center different is how it came to be. Through listening sessions, surveys, and design workshops with partners including Corazón Healdsburg, On the Margins, and Alliance Medical Center, more than 130 residents helped shape a vision for a welcoming, intergenerational space rooted in belonging. That process produced ten Design Mandates that now guide plans for a place to gather, access services, celebrate culture, and strengthen community ties.

And the involvement didn’t stop there. A 15-person Design Advisory Committee of youth and adults will participate in the full arc of the project, from visioning and design through completion. Architecture firm Goring & Straja and landscape architect Carducci Associates have translated those mandates into detailed renderings of an inviting, colorful space that reflects the values and aspirations of the people who will call it theirs.

Belonging is healthcare

Research is clear that social connection and a sense of belonging are fundamental to health. Isolation, exclusion, and the lack of culturally affirming community spaces don’t just diminish quality of life. They contribute to measurable health disparities. When people feel they belong, they are more likely to seek help, build resilience, and thrive.

“Belonging is not just about being invited into a space. It is about being part of shaping it. Community members have been part of imagining and now designing a place that takes form through their own lens. When people feel seen, heard, and connected, they thrive.”

Where we are now

The center is in its early stages, with Phase 1 now underway. Tiers 2 through 6 will follow, expanding to courtyards, indoor spaces, and outdoor gathering areas.

Tier 1 – Underway now

Exterior walls are being painted in bright, vibrant colors to reflect the community’s spirit and help visitors navigate the campus. Community-based multicultural murals, created through a participatory process with local artists, will follow.

Tiers 2 through 3 – Coming next

Future phases will expand to courtyard renovations, indoor room upgrades, and new gathering spaces.
